FIND A GOOD BUDDY –I interviewed several people
to find someone who is:
Safety oriented
Has similar diving interests
Has stayed current in their diving skills
BE A GOOD BUDDY – I dive the buddy system and stay with my buddy for the
entire dive. For at least 1 hour before my dive I:
Practiced out-of-air techniques with my buddy
Practiced hand signals
Discussed the dive plan with my buddy
Thoroughly checked out mine and my buddies equipment
I TAKE CARE OF MY EQUIPMENT SO
IT WILL TAKE CARE OF ME:
All my equipment has been serviced by a reputable shop within the last
year, according to the manufacturers recommendations
I never use gear that is broken or malfunctioning
If purchasing used dive gear, I always get it serviced before use
I CARRY SAFETY EQUIPMENT – Diving Safety is no Accident, I carry at least
three of these items and practice using them:
Redundant Air System (Spare Air / Pony Bottle)
Dive knife
Whistle
Safety Sausage
Underwater Signaling Device
Back-up timer & Depth Gauge in case computer fails
I NEVER DIVE DEEPER THAN THE DEPTH OF MY EXPERIENCE:
I dive in conditions that match my level of training & experience
I dive in caves / caverns / wrecks only if properly trained & equipped
I obtain an orientation when diving in a new or
unfamiliar area
I ALWAYS CHECK MY AIR: I constantly check my air gauge and start my
ascent when down to 500 psi of air
I NEVER STRETCH THE RULES:
I reference my dive tables and never push the limits
I follow all guidelines of my training agency on every dive
IF I HAVE A DOUBT – I GET OUT:
In dangerous conditions I postpone dive or go to alternate location
If I’m in a situation that is over my head, or doesn’t feel right I don’t
dive
I AM ALWAYS LEARNING:
I know diving education doesn’t end with my Open water Dive Certification
– I have taken at least one advanced course
I have taken a refresher course each year
I read up on the latest dive and safety techniques.
I dive often to stay proficient
